The Pirls project

In 1991 the IEA (The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) was responsible for the first international literacy survey which Norway took part in.

The survey was for 9 year olds and 14 year olds in 32 countries. Towards the end of the 90s, the IEA took the initiative to a new literacy study, PIRLS 2001 (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study), which included pupils in the 4th grade (10 year olds) in 32 countries. IEA wants to carry out the survey every 5 years. PIRLS 2006 includes 42 countries and Norway takes part with students in the 4th grade (10 year olds) and a smaller selection of pupils in the 5th grade (11 year olds).
